What ever happened to...

Andrew McCarthy? I don't mean, what happened to him physically. I know that he's still making films & television shows, but what happened to his career? I will always stand behind St. Elmo's Fire and Pretty in Pink, and for some ungodly reason, Jean thinks Weekend at Bernie's is fantastic, but other than a small role in The Joy Luck Club in 1993, "what's he done since?" is the question. Nothing worth while is the answer. I watched Less than Zero last night, and while Robert Downey Jr. does a fantastic job playing himself, Andrew McCarthy is pretty good too. I can't believe that over the course of the last 20 years I'd never seen it before. Not only is it based on a book by Bret Easton Ellis, it's about drugs and features a great song by L.L. Cool J. In fact, Rick Ruben was the music advisor on the set.Dida? He was the Brazilian #1 goalie for quite a long time, but after his shady showing against Celtic the other day, I can't imagine anyone will take this douchebag seriously for quite a long time. Watch as a fan runs onto the field & lightly touches his face, at which point Dida turns to chase the guy and after about steps decides to fall over as if this fan has actually hurt him. In an attempt to get Celtic, who was about to beat Milan after a piss-poor 3-0 spanking, he tried to get Celtic in trouble and even allowed himself to be taken off the field on a stretcher. Even if you're not a soccer fan or if you are only interested because your kid happens to play, you need to check this out.

Actually Dida has not been Brasil's #1 goalie for all that long. During the World Cup in 2002, Marcos was their #1, and before that it was Taffarel for quite a long time. Dida was really only the #1 for about 3 years, and he has not played for Brasil's national team since the World Cup final in 2006. He's also the guy who got hit with a flare that some douchebag fan shot out of the stands a couple years ago, so he's probably a little more sensitive to fans attacking players and all that. That being said, what the fuck? Are soccer players so used to diving and faking injuries that they even do it when not playing?

P.S. Speaking of movies based on Bret Easton Ellis novels, have you seen The Rules of Attraction with James Vanderbeek? It's a weird one. Vanderbeek's character is actually the brother of Patrick Bateman (American Psycho), but they never mention that in the movie. It's got a great soundtrack.

I saw it, except that the disc I was watching started skipping w/ about 10 minutes to go, right when they were going to the drug deal w/ all the guns and shit. I'm sure something crazy was about to go down, but I never go around to reenting a different copy, so I don't know how it ends.

I read Glammerama a couple years ago. It's also about the same basic group of people. It is fantastic. I'e never read anything else by him though.

And 3 years is a long time to be the national goalie.

Really?!!! That's QUITE A WHILE? For a goalie?!!! Taffarel's tenure qualifies as forever then. What about Oliver Khan, Tony Meola, Kasey Keller, etc.? The list goes on and on of guys who have served longer than 3 years. I think you should edit your post and research your thoughts before making such wild claims in the future. "3 years is a long time" is a piss poor argument in support of your comments.

And Rules of Attraction doesn't really have much of an end. In fact, the first time I saw it, I thought the DVD was fucked up and I had missed the end. It cuts off, kind of like the end of the Sopranos. Maybe it's where that douchebag got the idea from.

I'm not saying 3 years is a long time, but most people only get a few international caps. 3 straight years is a good run. Tony Meola only had such a long run because the US didn't have any other options. Certainly Kahn and Barthez had long runs, but they were some of the best in the world... as Dida was for a while. Cech will have a long rn before he retires too. He's still pretty young.

I'll have to see it again. I've never seen American Psycho either and supposedly there's a Glammerama movie being made by the same people that made The Rules of Attraction.

You really care about what happened to Andrew McCarthy...now who's the one on PCP?

As far as the video goes, I'm just mesmerized by the announcers' accents.

Interesting point. My concern lies in the fact that he made a few really cool films and then w/ Mannequin and Weekend at Bernie's his carreer just took a nose-dive.

Jean's right Weekend at Bernies is sweet.
